Cloud Foundry Summit 2016 was amazing! I learned a lot through the two days and met some amazing minds like the wonderful Dr. David Dauber. He’s now on my team as the lead scientist. I met lots of cool people and learned a lot.
Dauber is a great speaker and a great writer. He’s a professor at U of O and also runs his own company. I saw him at this event and he was as great as he’s been before.
As I got more into the show, I realized that a lot of the talks were not on topic. The topics of the talks were all about the new tools and methods that cloud foundry is using to deploy these huge applications and infrastructure clouds and everything in between. I was a little disappointed to hear that Cloud Foundry is still using C++ and all the other C++ standards that were so popular in the early days of C#.
Cloud Foundry is an open source framework for building cloud computing applications. The goal is to build the world’s most scalable application platform for public and private clouds. It is a framework that other C standards, and all the new languages, work within. The developers and communities behind it are building infrastructure and application software applications in a whole new way.
As C is being replaced with C++, there is some concern by the community about using C in place of C++. The reason it’s a concern is because the C and C++ community is so closely intertwined that it’s hard to imagine any other language replacing C++.
The reason why is because once you get to the point that you can write C code that works on a cloud platform, then the only way to really get it to work is if you don’t touch the platform itself. This is because once you do touch the platform, you have to deal with the different components of the platform as well. For cloud applications, this means that you have to deal with the operating system, file systems, libraries, networking protocols, and more.
And because of this, as soon as you want to make something that works on a cloud platform, you have to either build it from scratch or look for third party libraries. The goal of the current C.Theory Summit was to share the work of some of the most important people in cloud computing. Our team at Cloud Foundry discussed the challenges they face in writing C.
This is a conference that focuses on the cloud. We’re talking about the cloud because we’re all cloud users. There’s no such thing as a non cloud user. We get to work with the cloud, and we’re all in it together. I think that’s the message we wanted to send.
I think Cloud Foundry is a community. We are all in this together. The biggest challenge we face is when we try to talk about the cloud in an abstract way. When the world is all too focused on cloud services, which is its own beast, we can sometimes miss out on something that we should be talking about.
Theres a great example of Cloud Foundry in action in the new trailer: Colt Vahn. He’s in a world without Cloud Foundry, but it doesn’t stop him from doing his thing. As he talks to a fellow human about what he’s doing in the cloud, he reveals that he’s been doing this since he woke up on Deathloop and he’s getting closer to the Visionaries.
