Grid-connected data centers are pushing back on the need for a new public broadband internet. The demand for internet is so high right now that many are considering shutting down their data centers. But that’s not going to stop the data center lobby from pushing the grid toward a point where it is unsustainable.
The reason for this is probably because, as we’ve discussed in the previous chapter, data centers are really just a way of accessing the world that you can do with a computer, so they’re not a good idea.
Data centers are the second largest energy consumers in the world and are only increasing in importance over the years. At the same time, the amount of data being generated is growing at an exponential rate. So the more data you can produce, the more energy you have left over to process it. If you can’t access all the data you need to produce, then you need to store it somewhere before you can access it.
So, if you’re thinking of setting up a data center, you have three choices: put it in the ground, put it up on a rooftop, or put it in space. By all means, put it in the ground. Data centers are the largest single source of greenhouse gases, so unless you’re going to make sure your project is energy efficient, you should definitely put in a data center somewhere.
For the past few months, I’ve been tracking this data center push to grid push phenomenon. I’ve found that data centers are actually quite a bit more energy efficient than traditional buildings. The data centers in question are those in the San Jose, CA area, which I suspect, have been the main sites of this push. Because the data center is located in the middle of the city, many of the city’s energy-intensive light bulbs stay on 24/7.
Grid-to-grid push has been occurring in the Bay Area for a couple years now. This is mostly due to energy-saver appliances like fridges and air conditioners. But the big push came last summer with the building of the new data center in Silicon Valley. This new data center is the latest in a long line of data centers being built in the area, this one being the latest.
This is a reminder that every time you build a data center, you are also constructing a new city. And so when you build a data center, you create a new city, and so you have to live in that city. I am no fan of the city. However, the data center was only built to house a single data center, which was actually a good thing.
